China, health, The China Chapter

医院医疗 – Hospital Healthcare

Wow!  It’s been a while since I’ve written and it will definitely take a few posts to catch everyone up on what’s been going on here in the Orient.

In mid-February, my ankle started to swell for no apparent reason.  A bit alarmed, I went to a nearby doctor who told me I had soft tissue damage.  He gave me some Chinese medicine to take as well as some gel to rub on my ankle.  About a week later, my ankle was still huge and very tender.  So I went back to the doctor who told me I could possibly have a blood clot and should go to the nearby hospital to hang out in the emergency room and get checked out.  I called my friend Jason, hoping he and his wife Yang could help me out.  Sure enough, they (along with my friend Kristen) picked me up from one doctor and took me, after some trial and error, to the HuaXi Hospital (one of the top hospitals in the whole country) to be poked and prodded.  I don’t think you’ve really experienced Asia until you’ve experienced Asian health care…

Thankfully, Yang spoke to doctors for me in rapid-fire Chinese, held up curtains to keep out curious Chinese men, and in general just…was the most amazing person ever.  I had blood drawn and an ultrasound that came back to say that no, I did not have a blood clot.  Rather, I was severely lacking in iron which was not helping damage done to my ankle heal.  Soaking my ankle, elevating it, and taking iron supplements and I’m feeling quite a bit better.

That’s really all I have time to write right now.  Tune in next time to read about Chinese New Year in all its glory!

Becoming a Loser

Last year, my goal was read 52 books in 52 weeks. I failed. I only read (well, wrote down) 31 books, a success rate of a little less than 60%. This year, from this May to next May, my goal is to lose 100lbs in the same number of weeks. Even if I fall short, with my last year’s success rate, I will still be nearly 60lbs lighter. The journey of a year begins tomorrow. Tonight I reminisce about the novels and tales of my last year’s goal…
